Handshake

The University offers a service called Handshake, through which students can access employment opportunities from various employers and communicate with the employers about these. Please note that as a student in CSE or CLA, you need to have your first resume sent for approval before you can apply for a position.

Once you log in, on the left bar you will see a variety of options. For example, under Communicate Resources you can see tips for interviews etc. Or, under Schedule you will see various scheduled career events, such as career fairs. Under Relationships, you can see listings of employers, various relevant contacts and UMN alumni with their contact information. All these pages are searchable.

One of the most interesting aspects of Handshake to you will probably be the Jobs Job Postings page. If you search for “physics” you will get tens of thousands of hits, most of which are for physical therapist positions, which is probably not what you are
looking for. For that reason, the recommended way to search for relevant positions, is to go in the Filters option and filter by Physics, Astrophysics or Astronomy major. This does a good job of narrowing down to relevant opportunities (at present a few hundred). The Filters option has other useful criteria, such as the job role or estimated pay etc.

Hopefully you find this useful. Of course, many relevant positions will not be posted on Handshake, so don’t neglect looking at other resources, including the weekly School of Physics and Astronomy Newsletter, emails from [email protected] and the
UMN Physics and Astronomy Students and Alumni LinkedIn page. Remember too that networking is the most likely means for landing a job.
